Sound

At the beginning of the sequence there is a very soft sound of music, which is accompanied with credits. This suspenseful music continues while the camera pans down onto a round shape, onto which the credits continue. The music starts to slowly get louder as the the round object spins to turn into a light hanging from the ceiling. The camera slowly moves out of the room, the tempo of the music staying steadily the same. As a women's silhouette appears in the window the music starts to quicken, adding more suspense to the sequence. The camera then turns to the right uncovering a older women's face in the face of the Grandfather clock sat in the hallway, the camera starts to move in faster towards the women. The scene then suddenly changes to reveal the title of the film 'Insidious' in big, red, bold, lettering, this is when the music is at its climax, blaring out a near screeching noise, creating a dark, anxious and frightful atmosphere.

Shots

In the beginning there is a high angle shot which shows the little boy asleep in bed as being small and vulnerable, this is followed by an establishing shot which shows the scene of the boy asleep in his bedroom. Throughout the corse of the film there is a lot of low lighting to help create the intended atmosphere. The camera then continues to move through the room to the right into what seems to be the kitchen, this could be a Pan shot. The camera moves again to the right into the hallway, showing the face of an elderly women in the face of the Grandfather clock. The camera then moves toward the women's face, making it the main focus of the last frame, this could be a Zoom shot. The same affect is used when the title appears on screen, the title is made to fit the whole screen and as it fades, the camera starts to zoom into it, making it more intrusive adding more of a frightful feeling.

Editing

The editing for the majority of the sequence is fairly simple, for the most part it is continuous because most of the anxious and frightful setting lies within the shots and sounds. As soon as the Pan shot from the light lands on the little boy sleeping, there is a smooth movement of the camera into the kitchen, showing a brief outline of a women through a curtain, this could be a Cutaway shot. It then continues onto the hallway in which we see the Grandfather clock with the women inside. Then the title suddenly cuts the scene and appears on screen, this could be a Jump cut.

Narrative

There is no narrative in this sequence, the only effects needed to create fear and suspense are the sounds and the different shots. There isn't much action in this sequence, therefore being drawn to all the details that are so carefully placed in each scene. If there was any narrative it would take the attention away from every minute detail as the cameras subtly moved through each room. It wouldn't make sense to add a narrative part to the sequence as the dead silence adds to the effect of there being of a dark, anxious and frightful atmosphere.
