'Cloverfields' Analysis

13:46

In a group of 5, we were asked to analyse the movie 'Cloverfields'. Above is the opening clip to which I analysed in detail. I watched the whole film to see if there were any specific changes with the style of filming & to see if any specific techniques were used throughout which were not showed in the first 3 minute opening scene.

Below is a timeline construction analysis of the opening scene to show the detail of shots, angles, movement and other techniques shown within 3 minutes.

The movie itself is set in a documentary style, this allows the movie to incorporate many techniques such as a constant point of view shot. As it is set in a documentary style this makes the viewer feel as if they are somewhat with the characters which increases intensity and suspense especially within the main events, which are shown in the opening clip. There are many forms of zoom in and out shots again to both make the viewer feel as if they are there and also increase the sense of reality. As it is a constant POV (Point Of View) shot many reaction shots are captured from the view of the person behind the camera, these reaction shots consist of medium, long, close up and extreme close up shots on the main characters.

Within the film many flashbacks are incorporated. The story line revolves around the usage of the camera to which the tape is being over run, this therefore flashes back to where the tape is being over run. This is very controversial through out the film as the original footage is full of life and shows to be very happy and of light color, compared to when it flashes back to what is the current time which is where the main events occur including dark, saddening views. To enhance this the original footage is taken in straight views from high angles with no zooms or tilts and mainly medium shots (very simple) Compared to what is the current footage which is taken mainly of extreme close ups and long shots, as well as zoom shots being in almost every scene in enhance the event and situation occurring, the current footage is also taken at more tilted angles than any other, this is to show the discomfort and instability with both the characters and the story-line. Also the style of documentary includes things such as glitches to add to the intensity of documentary, to make the camera quality decrease and to see things such as glitches again make the viewer feel as if they are watching a tape back themselves rather than a nonfiction 'story'

Many events occur that allow the camera to capture many reaction shots, when this does occur every shot is taken at eye level to again enhance the idea of it being a constant POV (Point Of View) shot and again to make the viewer feel more involved and enhance the intensity.

Sound effects are also used as the film is nonfiction, mainly to enhance the events that take place such as loud bashes and crumbling and explosions all of which are a lot louder than the rest of the film again to increase the intensity of the POV (Point Of View) shot

Overall the film is well presented and incorporates the style of documentary very well, all while capturing the film in a very watchable way involving many techniques, angles, shots and sound effects as well as dialogue.
